1. What has the European Commission done for better bee health?
The Commission contributes to bee health on many areas:
On the veterinary side, the Commission: created an EU Reference Laboratory for bee health in 2011; co-financed voluntary surveillance studies to estimate the extent of bee mortalities since 2012; trained hundreds of national veterinary officials in bee health under the Better Training for Safer Food initiative since 2010, and ran research projects to deal with honeybee health.

Bruxelles veut sauvegarder les abeilles sans proscrire les pesticides

La Commission européenne a indiqué, lundi 28 janvier, qu'elle allait proposer des mesures "contraignantes" pour protéger les abeilles contre les dangers de certains pesticides au sein de l'UE, sans toutefois préconiser une interdiction totale de ces substances.

"La Commission va proposer une série de mesures législatives ambitieuses mais proportionnées" lors de la réunion du comité permanent de l'UE chargé de ces questions, prévue jeudi, a annoncé le commissaire à la santé et à la politique des consommateurs, Tonio Borg. "Notre proposition demandera des mesures harmonisées et contraignantes au sein de l'UE", a ajouté le commissaire maltais à l'occasion du conseil des ministres de l'agriculture. "Une action rapide et décisive" s'impose pour limiter l'impact de certains pesticides sur les abeilles, mais "une interdiction totale ne serait pas justifiée", a-t-il assuré.
