Earthquake prediction: Chinese scientists anticipate seismic events with 83% effectiveness

Earthquake prediction

A study published in the scientific journal NPJ Natural Hazards and reported by the South China Morning Post details that Chinese scientists can anticipate seismic events with an 83% success rate. The research was based on the analysis of 12 major earthquakes that occurred within China between 2022 and 2024.

The experts documented the appearance of disturbances in the form of concentric rings that emerge prior to a significant seismic event. These waves propagate from areas identified as future epicenters, serving as a key precursor indicator of seismic activity.

To achieve this finding, the scientists analyzed anomalous seismic, magnetic, and ionospheric resonances by processing integrated data. Of the 12 areas identified by the model as potential risk zones, 10 (83%) experienced an actual earthquake within the three-month period following the emergence of these patterns.

The authors acknowledged that the current accuracy of the method is limited by the ambiguity of certain signals, the low density of the ground-based measurement network, and the need for a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms behind these anomalies. In light of this, China is moving forward with the modernization of its terrestrial observation system.

  1. On Friday at 12:40 (local time), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued an early warning, alerting of a 9.9-magnitude earthquake expected to be felt from the north to the center of the country. The alert sparked panic and confusion among the population, given that the strongest earthquake ever recorded in modern history was a 9.5-magnitude event in Chile in 1960.
