Low water levels in the Rhine; Germany’s largest airport faces potential jet fuel shortages

Lufthansa has instructed its pilots to refuel their aircraft with an extra margin at other airports, so that they require less jet fuel upon arrival in Frankfurt.

According to Bild, fuel deliveries have been hampered by low water levels in the Rhine, which have forced tankers to reduce their cargo loads, as well as scheduled maintenance on the pipeline that supplies the airport.

According to Bild, guidelines for aircraft in the Airbus A320 family set an upper limit of eight metric tons of additional fuel. At the same time, flight planning should ensure that the added weight does not result in restrictions on the transport of passengers or cargo.

Lufthansa emphasized that the measures are intended to ensure reliable flight operations. They will remain in effect until further notice and be adjusted as the situation evolves, the report said.
