Super Typhoon Chaba to threaten Japan, South Korea this week

Typhoon Chaba will threaten lives and property across the Ryukyu Islands and mainland Japan this week. A northward shift in the track could threaten southern South Korea as well.

Chaba reached super typhoon status, strengthening to the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane on Monday afternoon, local time.

Damaging winds, torrential rain and seas will increase around Chaba's center, posing dangers to shipping interests.

Residents of the Ryukyu Islands, southern mainland Japan and southern South Korea need to prepare for the future typhoon to make a direct hit or pass dangerously close during the start of the week.
