Boston Sets Snowfall Record

People in the northeastern U.S. city of Boston will look forward to the arrival of spring Friday after enduring the city's highest winter season snowfall on record.
A storm on Sunday dropped another 7.4 centimeters of snow, pushing the total since November to 275.8 centimeters. That is more than double Boston's average of 110 centimeters of snow in a season.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh joked about the new record on Twitter, comparing the wintry milestone to Boston's recent string of major sports championships. "There will be no parade," he wrote.

The season actually started slow with Boston getting less than a centimeter of snow in December at its international airport where the official data is recorded. But in a three-week stretch starting January 25, the city endured a punishing stretch of multiple storms that dropped a combined 217 centimeters of snow.

That helped the month of February become Boston's snowiest since the previous record in 1995-96.

  1. Still reeling from storm after ferocious storm in the recent grim months, Boston has broken its record for snow recorded in one winter season, the National Weather Service said Sunday...

The unwanted milestone was greeted with dark humor from Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, who joked on Twitter: "Superbowls, World Series', Stanley Cups, and snowfall records. We are truly a title city. There will be no parade."

As of Sunday, the city's Logan airport had been hit with 108.6 inches (275.8 cm) of seasonal snowfall, the NWS said, breaking the old record of 107.6 for the 1995-1996 winter season.

New England, the northeastern stretch of the US east and north of New York state, was whacked by several nasty storm systems this winter, forcing people to dig tunnels outside their homes and -- in some cases -- relieve cabin fever by jumping off their roof to the massive drifts below.
