The tunnel, whose construction was carried out for 17 years, will connect Northern and southern Europe — from Rotterdam in the Netherlands to Genoa in Italy.
Previously, the longest tunnel in the world was considered a railway tunnel, Seikan in Japan, whose length is 53.9 kilometers.

ReplyDeleteEs war eine Eröffnung mit Pomp und Prominenz - und um 12.52 Uhr hatte der Gotthard-Tunnel seine Prüfung bestanden: Die ersten beiden Züge erreichten das Ziel auf der jeweils anderen Seite. Eröffnungsgast Merkel sprach von einem "wunderbaren Tag" und lobte die Schweizer Präzision.
Mit einem "Bahn frei" hat der Schweizer Bundespräsident Johann Schneider-Ammann den neuen Gotthardtunnel freigegeben. Auf das Signal hin fuhren zwei Züge mit jeweils 500 Bürgern vom Nord- und Südportal aus in den 57 Kilometern langen Eisenbahntunnel und waren nach knapp 20 Minuten auf der jeweils anderen Seite.
Als "historischen Tag" würdigte das Schweizer Staatsoberhaupt die Eröffnung. An der Fertigstellung des "Jahrhundertwerks" hätten mehrere Generationen mitgewirkt.
