A tsunami threat was issued this Friday for the coasts of several Latin American countries following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Panama.
The U.S. warning system alerted of the possibility of dangerous waves in Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico in the hours following the quake.
This is considered a “Great Earthquake,” which has the potential to destroy communities near the epicenter.
There is a tsunami threat in the Pacific, including the potential for destructive tsunamis on the west coast of the United States.

ReplyDeleteEl Instituto de Geociencias de la Universidad de Panamá estimó preliminarmente la magnitud del terremoto en 7,2 y situó su epicentro a 39 kilómetros al oeste de Tonosí, con un hipocentro a apenas 4 kilómetros de profundidad. El movimiento telúrico se produjo a las 12:56 PM (hora local).

(USGS) calculó inicialmente una magnitud de 7,6 y una profundidad de 10 kilómetros, con epicentro a 10 kilómetros al suroeste de Pitaloza Arriba, en la provincia panameña de Herrera. Las diferencias responden a las estimaciones preliminares realizadas por ambos organismos tras el sismo.

Among the subsequent tremors, one reported at 1:22 p.m. (local time) stands out; it had a preliminary estimated magnitude of 6.1, a depth of 10 kilometers, and an epicenter located 20 kilometers northeast of Tonosí.
