Global average life expectancy has reached 73.3 years, a figure close to the level recorded in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced.
"Following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, global life expectancy has returned virtually to pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, non-communicable diseases account for an increasing proportion of mortality," the organization noted.
In 2023, global average life expectancy "reached 73.3 years, close to the 73.4-year figure recorded in 2019," the WHO detailed. However, healthy life expectancy is "recovering more slowly: in 2023, it stood at 62.8 years, still 0.4 years below the 2019 level."
