A temperature of 45.7 degrees Celsius was recorded yesterday, Thursday, in El Granado in southwestern Spain,a record for the month of September and the highest temperature recorded in the country so far this year,the meteorological agency Aemet announced today.
The previous record of 45.7 degrees Celsius had been set in Montoro, also in Andalusia, on September 6, 2016.
Some areas of Andalusia—though not the one where El Granado is located—were placed under a red heatwave alert for several hours yesterday by Aemet; the agency noted that this was the first time since the warning system was established in 2007 that it had been activated at this level in September for such a reason.
Like much of Europe, Spain is experiencing a particularly hot summer this year, with successive heatwaves—including the latest one this week.
July 2026 was the hottest on record in Spain, on par with July 2022, according to the meteorological service.
