Oman's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is developing a fog-harvesting project in the mountains of the Dhofar Governorate, in the south of the country, with the aim of measuring how much water can be obtained from this phenomenon and using it as an alternative supply source, local media reported.
Khalid Salim Al Hooti, Director of the Ministry's Artificial Rain Enhancement Center, explained that this is a "promising" technique for harnessing this form of atmospheric moisture, which is common during the Khareef monsoon season.
He noted that the system captures the tiny droplets suspended in the fog and converts them into usable water with relatively low energy consumption, particularly in areas where this phenomenon occurs frequently.
Twelve collection stations are currently operational across nine locations in the mountains. During the Khareef season, these facilities record the volume of condensation alongside climatic and topographical data. Based on this information, researchers aim to develop a predictive model to identify the sites with the greatest potential for fog water harvesting.
Al Hooti emphasized that the project's value extends beyond the quantity of water collected, as its goal is to establish a robust scientific foundation for data-driven decision-making based on accurate field data. The initiative is part of Oman's efforts to diversify its water sources and improve water management efficiency.
