Death toll from 'hellish' European storms climbs to 14, most from falling trees

 

 1. Violent thunderstorms and hurricane-force winds have left at least 14dead across France, Italy and Austria as 'hellish' storms ripped across the continent.



The extreme weather produced 140mph gusts, leaving 45,000 households without power on Corsica, where six people were killed including a teenage girl crushed by a tree and an elderly woman smacked by a beach hut roof.

2. Heavy rain and winds wrecked campsites on the island, while in Venice, Italy, masonry was blown off the bell tower of St Mark's Basilica.
The storms follow weeks of heatwave and drought across much of the continent.
In Corsica, winds gusting up to 224 km/h (140mph) uprooted trees and damaged mobile homes.
Authorities there said a 13-year-old girl was killed by a falling tree on a campsite.
