La Palma volcano more active than ever

 --

A volcano on the Spanish Island of La Palma is said to be more active than ever. A crater has partially collapsed – allowing new rivers of lava almost three kilometres wide to flow towards previously unaffected areas.

The Canary Islands Institute says a new and more intense phase has begun. Authorities are monitoring the direction of the flows and are preparing to evacuate residents.

More than 2,000 homes and buildings have been destroyed by the molten magma – which covers more than 22 million square metres of land.
