Plane wreckage found in Argentina 50 years after crash

Half a century after crashing in southern Argentina, the wreckage of a twin-engine Piper Apache aircraft has been found with the bodies of the four people on board, Argentina's National News Agency DyN reported Thursday.

The four people on board were the pilot, the head engineer at the Pan American Argentina Oil Co. Miguel Sanchez Navarro, and two other engineers.

On Oct. 19, 1964, the plane went down over Lake Colhue Huapi in the south of Chubut province. Two rescue and search efforts in 1964 and 1980 found nothing.

The wreckage was discovered on Monday when a local man "saw the wing of a plane sticking out of the ground. The rest of the aircraft was buried," DyN said.

A team working to recover the wreckage said part of the lake had evaporated, exposing what was left of the fuselage.
