Finnish power and marine technology company Wartsila announced on Friday that it will build a major power plant in Acajutla, El Salvador.

The company said it has signed a contract with Energia del Pacifico S.A., an energy company of El Salvador, to build a power plant in the coastal city of Acajutla.

The plant with a capacity of 378 MW will be the largest and more efficient power plant in El Salvador, and the first to use LNG-based natural gas in Central America, said the company.

The power plant is scheduled to begin construction in 2016 and put into production in 2018.

Founded in 1834 and headquartered in Helsinki, Wartsila is a Finnish power and marine technology company. The company operates in about 70 countries and employs nearly 18,000 workers.
