  1. A 6.8-magnitude earthquake early Saturday struck offshore not far from Fukushima, Japan -- the epicenter of a nuclear crisis following a massive 2011 earthquake and tsunami -- the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.

The same agency issued tsunami advisories for the Pacific coast in the region of Tohoku, as well as for coastal regions in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures following the quake.

"Marine threat is in place," the meteorological agency warned for those in imperiled areas. "Get out of the water and leave the coast immediately."

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was centered off Honshu island some 129 kilometers (79 miles) east-southeast of Namie and 284 kilometers east-northeast of Tokyo. It was 13 kilometers, or 8 miles, deep.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

Any sizable tremor in or near Japan -- and any tsunami warning -- inevitably raises dark memories dating to March 11, 2011, when a 9.0-magnitude struck 231 miles northeast of Tokyo.

That quake, the fourth largest on record since 1900 and the largest ever to hit Japan, produced a tsunami with 30-foot waves

When all was over, the combination of the quake and, especially, the tsunami left some 16,000 people dead.

The event also set off a prolonged crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in the northern part of Honshu, including the spread of some radioactive material and very real fears of an even worse calamity as authorities tried to bring the dangerous situation under control.

  2. TOKYO, July 12 (Reuters) - An earthquake with preliminary magnitude 6.8 hit off eastern Japan on Saturday morning and a warning for a minor tsunami of up to one meter was issued for the northeastern coast, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.

There were no immediate reports of abnormalities at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, which is in the area, NHK said.

The quake registered a moderate 4 on the Japanese seismic scale of 1-7, meaning that major damage was unlikely. (Reporting by Edmund Klamann; Editing by Sonya Hepinstall)

  5. A strong earthquake hit off Fukushima Prefecture early Saturday, triggering a small tsunami and injured at least one person....

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the 6.8-magnitude quake struck 10 kilometers below the sea surface off the coast of Fukushima at 4:22 a.m. The quake shook buildings in Tokyo, about 250 kilometers southwest of the epicenter.

A 20-centimeter tsunami reached the coast of Ishinomaki Ayukawa and Ofunato, about 50 minutes after the quake. Smaller waves were observed at several other locations along the coast. Changes to the shoreline were not visible on television footage of NHK public broadcaster.

In Fukushima, a 68-year-old woman fell down the stairs and broke her leg, according to the prefectural police. No damage was reported.

Eight towns devastated by the tsunami three years ago, including Rikuzentakata, Higashi Matsushima and Otsuchi, issued evacuation advisories to thousands of households along the northern coast, along with schools and community centers.

All tsunami and evacuation advisories were lifted about two hours after the quake.

The stricken Fukushima Daiichi and two other nuclear power plants, along with other nuclear facilities along the coast, found no abnormalities, and their reactors and fuel storage pools are being cooled safely, according to the Nuclear Regulation Authority.

Tokyo Electric Power Co, which operates the Fukushima Daiichi plant, has instructed plant workers on night duty along the coast to retreat to higher grounds.
