Ο πρωθυπουργός απηύθηνε πρόσκληση στον πρόεδρο της Ρωσίας να επισκεφθεί την Αθήνα. Η συνάντηση που διήρκεσε 40 λεπτά σηματοδοτεί σύμφωνα με το Μέγαρο Μαξίμου την αναθέρμανση των σχέσεων της ελληνικής κυβέρνησης με το Κρεμλίνο που έχουν μπει στον πάγο μετά το ναυάγιο της ΔΕΠΑ, για το οποίο η μία πλευρά καταλογίζει την ευθύνη στην άλλη.
Από μόνη της η συνάντηση με αντικείμενο την οικονομία εκτιμά η κυβέρνηση συνιστά αναθεώρηση της δήλωσης του κ. Πούτιν ότι «η Ελλάδα δεν είναι καλή χώρα για επενδύσεις» που είχε κάνει μετά το ναυάγιο.
Στο τετ α τετ των Βρυξελλών, πάντως, συζητήθηκε το σύνολο των ελληνορωσικών σχέσεων με έμφαση στα ενεργειακά, τις ιδιωτικοποιήσεις και τον τουρισμό. Η ελληνική πλευρά επιδιώκει πάντα μείωση της τιμής του φυσικού αερίου για το οποίο η διαπραγμάτευση βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη.
Σύμφωνα με τις ίδιες πληροφορίες, ο κ. Πούτιν εμφανίστηκε θετικός στο ελληνικό αίτημα. Φυσικά η ελληνική κυβέρνηση θα ήθελε να επαναληφθεί το ενδιαφέρον της ρωσικής κυβέρνησης για την ΔΕΠΑ, εφόσον βέβαια ξεπεραστούν τα εμπόδια που βάζει η ΕΕ.
Παλαιότερα η ελληνική κυβέρνηση εμφανιζόταν βέβαιη ότι η Ρωσία δείχνει ενδιαφέρον για τους σιδηροδρόμους σε συνδυασμό και με το λιμάνι της Θεσσαλονίκης. Κυβερνητικές πηγές εξέφραζαν συγκρατημένη αισιοδοξία ότι στο προσεχές διάστημα θα δούμε κι άλλες κινήσεις από την πλευρά της ρωσικής κυβέρνησης που θα εκδηλώσει συγκεκριμένο ενδιαφέρον. Ο κ. Σαμαράς ενημέρωσε για τις προσπάθειες που έχει κάνει η Ελλάδα και διαβεβαίωσε ότι είναι στο δρόμο της ανάκαμψης και ότι υπάρχει φιλικό κλίμα για επενδύσεις.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras met with the Prime Minister of Russia, Vladimiri Putin Tuesday. The high-profile talks were held in Brussels as Samaras visited the city to address a Business Europe conference and Putin had scheduled meetings with EU officials.
The Greek premier took the opportunity to request cheaper natural gas prices for Greece, 30 percent above the European average of of 380 dollars per thousand cubic meters.
Greece has considered international arbitration as energy firms DEPA and Gazprom have been unable to reach a compromise in the latest round of negotiations over the price of natural gas.
It seems Samaras was not successful in his bid to persuade Putin to agree to lower the price of gas as the Russian PM did not make any binding commitments on the matter and only indicated that he would examine the issue. Of course granting Samaras lower gas prices for Greece would mean opening the floodgates for further negotiations with other client states.
The Greek government is keen to take the huge burden of energy cost off the country’s industries and households. The Greek PM stressed lower natural gas prices from Russia – where Greece gets over 80 pct of its natural gas from – would be pivotal to the country’s bid to return to economic growth.
“My country is currently coming out of a six-year recession and low energy prices from Russia are crucial to our recovery,” Samaras said.
Besides the thorny energy issue, the two men discussed further ways to enhance economic ties between Greece and Russia as the sale of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) and Thessaloniki port has attracted Russian interest lately.
The Russian Prime Minister reportedly asked whether Athens would be able to go ahead with a single privatization tender for both OSE and the port of Thessaloniki.
On strengthening trade relations and tourism flow, the two men saw great scope for improvement while acknowledging the basis for cooperation was strong.
“Last year trade between us rose 16 pct. On the tourism front, results are truly impressive as 1.2 million Russians visited your country last year. There are also investment plans. It is with great pleasure that I will discuss whatever issue you put on the agenda” Mr. Putin told the Greek premier.
