Philippines Starts Evacuation as Typhoon Lando (Koppu) Approaches

Waves may reach up to 14 meters in open sea and heavy rains and flooding should be expected.

The Philippines is starting to evacuate residents of the Aurora Province in the Central Luzon region as typhoon Lando (Koppu) approaches.

"Typhoon ‘LANDO’ has slightly intensified and slowed down as it approaches Aurora Province," the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in a Saturday tropical cyclone warning, adding that "Lando is expected to make a landfall over Aurora area by Sunday morning."

According to the weather bureau waves may reach up to 14 meters (46 feet) in open sea and heavy rains and flooding should be expected.

"Fisherfolk are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of Luzon and Visayas and the eastern seaboard of Mindanao," the bureau said.

The bureau placed the Aurora, Isabela and Quirino provinces, among others, under public storm warning signal #3, warning of possible damage to infrastructure and widespread disruption of electrical power and communication services.

A number of domestic flights have been cancelled in the Philippines amid bad weather.

The Philippines is hit by dozens of tornadoes and typhoons annually during the rainy season that usually lasts between June and October.

  1. Typhoon Koppu Could Bring Devastating Rain to Philippines ...

A powerful, slow-moving typhoon is swirling toward the Philippines, raising the threat of torrential rains and possibly catastrophic flooding on the main island of Luzon.

Forecasters predict Typhoon Koppu will make landfall early Sunday, and could stall once it arrives, dumping as much as 600 millimeters of rain over the next several days.

As of midday Saturday, the storm had sustained winds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, and was expected to continue strengthening before hitting the country.

But the biggest threat could come from rain and the resulting floods, landslides and storm surges, according to forecasters.

    Preparing for Koppu

Authorities have begun canceling flights and are urging residents and tourists in vulnerable areas to move to safer locations, though it is not clear how many have evacuated.

Koppu is not expected to hit the capital, Manila, directly. It will instead likely sweep across the northern end of Luzon.......http://www.voanews.com/content/typhoon-koppu-could-bring-devastating-rain-to-philippines/3011699.html

  2. A powerful typhoon is battering the northern Philippines, with at least one person dead, several missing and thousands forced to flee their homes....

Typhoon Koppu made landfall near the town of Casiguran on the island of Luzon on Sunday morning, bringing winds of close to 200km/h (124mph).

The vast weather system toppled trees and power lines, triggering floods and landslides.

Koppu has since weakened but officials fear further flooding.

With the typhoon moving slowly, heavy rain is likely to fall in the same areas for several days.......BBC
