Japanese nuclear plant holds tsunami & meltdown drills

A major anti-disaster drill has been held at a nuclear plant in Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s main islands. The exercise followed a similar drill in Shikoku, and was based on the scenario of a powerful earthquake and tsunami striking the region.

Typhoon Chanthu lashed the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido Wednesday, with weather authorities warning of flooding, mudslides, high waves and swollen rivers in the region.

6.9-magnitude earthquake hits northern Japan/M6,8 σεισμός σημειώθηκε στις 16.17 (ώρα Ελλάδος) στο νησί Hokkaido της Ιαπωνίας

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake has hit the coast of Hokkaido, Japan, the US Geological Service reports. Two nuclear power plants are in the affected area.
­The quake that occurred at 11:17 pm (14:17 GMT) was marked 5 upper at JMA Seismic Intensity in several places in Hokkaido.
According to the USGC, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 120 kilometers.
Shaking could be felt near Hokkaido's capital Sapporo as well as in some regions of Tokyo, which is located down the island.
