Torrential rains leave dozens dead and more than a thousand homes damaged in India

 At least 56 people have died and another 46 have been injured amidst the relentless rains that battered the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on September 25 and 26, reports The Times of India, citing official figures.

The rainfall damaged 1,021 homes and killed 107 animals.

Over a 48-hour period, the state received an average of 66.5 millimeters of rain, compared to the usual 7.6 millimeters, representing a level 775% above normal. Rainfall significantly exceeded normal levels in 56 of the state's 75 districts.

“In view of the continuous heavy rainfall and the flood situation arising from it in Uttar Pradesh, officials have been directed to provide immediate relief and assistance to affected people. Compensation should be provided immediately, as per the rules, in cases of loss of human life and livestock caused by excessive rainfall. Admissible compensation should be provided at the earliest to people whose houses have collapsed due to the rains,” said an official statement.
