Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits western Turkey

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake rocked western Turkey, the country’s emergencies authority said.
The quake with an epicenter in the Balikesir province was registered at 7:53 p.m. local time (4:53 p.m. GMT). No casualties or damage were immediately reported.

 Initial reports indicate damage to at least 10 buildings, while evacuation operations are underway.

The Civil Protection Department is urging residents not to enter buildings due to fear of strong aftershocks.
