Powerful solar flare registered on April 6
A powerful solar flare, which affected shortwave radio communications, was registered by scientists on Thursday, the Heliophysics Service of the Fedorov Institute of Applied Geophysics said.
The flare, ranked as category M3.0, occurred at 08:53 Moscow time. It lasted 28 minutes.
According to the institute, even more solar flares of the most dangerous X category are possible on Friday.
Depending on power, solar flares are divided into five groups: A, B, C, M and X. The basix type of A0.0 reflects the standard level of radiation observed on the Earth’s orbit - 10 nanowatt per square meter. Every next tier multiplies the previous one by a factor of ten. Solar flares are normally accompanied by ejection of solar plasma, whose clouds may reach the Earth and cause geomagnetic storms.
