Powerful Indonesia earthquake sends islanders fleeing

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake rattled residents on islands west of Indonesia’s Sumatra on Tuesday, forcing them to flee to higher ground before an hours-long tsunami warning was lifted.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 3 am (2000 GMT Monday), was in the sea near the Mentawai islands at a depth of 15.5 kilometres (more than 9 miles), the United States Geological Survey said.

No casualties or severe damage were reported.

According to the report, earthquake tremors were felt in the districts and cities of the provinces of Western Sumatra and Northern Sumatra. In some places, the authorities ordered to evacuate people on high ground.

Early in the morning on Tuesday, April 25, streams of people evacuated to the mountainous area under the rain in the dark. Some patients from the Mentavai Island Hospital were moved to the yard due to cracks in the building.

The representative of the national seismological agency Abdula Muhari said that residents of some parts of the province of Western Sumatra felt a strong earthquake for approximately 30 seconds.
