Storms Kill 14 in India's Assam

At least 14 people were killed and many others injured after heavy rains, lightning and storms lashed India's northeastern state of Assam, officials said on Sunday.

"Eight people were killed on Friday and six deaths were reported on Saturday," said an official at Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Xinhua news agency reported.

The storms have left behind a trail of destruction, including damaged houses, uprooted trees and electric poles, and snapped electric lines.

Officials said electricity distribution has been affected to a large extent.

People have sought refuge in government offices and school buildings in the affected areas, local media reported.

According to official data, a total of 41,350 people in 1,037 villages in the state have been affected.

Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department has predicted rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms or lightning in the country's northeast in the next five days.
