Pakistan, India and Afghanistan rocked by deadly earthquake

A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake killed almost 150 people in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan Monday, officials said.

A tally from local and provincial authorities in Pakistan put the death toll there at 118, while at least 31 were confirmed dead in Afghanistan.

At least 100 people have been killed and hundreds wounded in northwestern Pakistan and Afghanistan after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the region.

The death toll could climb in coming days because communications were down in much of the rugged Hindu Kush mountain range area where the quake was centered.

Pakistani officials told Reuters that 76 were killed in Pakistan, while in neighbouring Afghanistan, the toll rose to 24.

In the northern Afghan province of Takhar, at least 12 girls were killed after a stampede broke out in their school.

The strong earthquake lasted almost a minute and was felt in the Indian capital of New Delhi, with buildings shaking in the center of the Indian capital. The buildings were evacuated.

Tremors were also felt as far away as Islamabad in Pakistan and the Afghan capital Kabul, but not in neighboring Nepal which was hit by a major quake in April.

Hundreds of people raced from buildings onto the streets in Delhi while the quake was also felt in the Himalayan region of Kashmir, according to an AFP reporter.

Shockwaves were felt in northern India and in Pakistan, where hundreds of people ran out of buildings as the ground rolled beneath them...

  1. Powerful quake rocks South Asia, more than 160 dead...

A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake which rocked parts of South Asia killed more than 160 people Monday, including 12 Afghan girls crushed in a stampede as they fled their collapsing school.

At least 1,000 more were injured and hundreds of homes destroyed as the quake shook a swathe of the subcontinent, sending thousands of frightened people rushing into the streets in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

It was centered near Jurm in northeast Afghanistan, 250 kilometers (160 miles) from the capital Kabul and at a depth of 213.5 kilometers, the US Geological Survey said.

"Initial reports show a big loss of life, huge financial losses in Badakhshan, Takhar, Nangarhar, Kunar and other regions, including the capital Kabul," said Afghanistan's chief executive Abdullah Abdullah.

At least 31 people were confirmed dead in Afghanistan and 135 in Pakistan, according to officials, with the toll set to rise.

"Exact numbers are not known because phone lines are down and communication has been cut off in many areas," Abdullah said, adding that the government has asked aid agencies for relief......http://www.i24news.tv/en/news/international/asia-pacific/90345-151026-7-5-magnitude-quake-rocks-s-asia-epicentre-in-north-afghanistan-usgs

  2. Rescue efforts are being stepped up to help those affected by the magnitude-7.5 earthquake which hit remote areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan on Monday...

At least 275 people are known to have died, and up to 2,000 were injured.

Rescue teams have been sent to remote mountainous areas where the effects of the quake are still unclear.

The quake's focus was deep, reducing its impact. Victims included 12 Afghan schoolgirls killed in a stampede as they tried to leave their classes.

"They fell under the feet of other students," a disaster official in the province of Takhar told Reuters.

Reports said many people across the region, afraid of a new quake, spent the night sleeping outside in temperatures close to freezing...........BBC
