Possible navy attack on North Korea-flagged tanker a "declaration of war". - Libyan rebels

An armed movement which has seized oil ports in eastern Libya said on Sunday any attempt by government forces to attack a North Korea-flagged tanker loading crude at a terminal under its control would be "like a declaration of war".

Abb-Rabbo al-Barassi, self-declared prime minister of the movement, warned Libya's navy not to "harm" the tanker docked at Es Sider, according to a statement.

"Such a move would be a declaration of war," said the statement, sent to Reuters by a spokesman.

  1. Illicitly Obtained Oil From Libya, Press Statement, Jen Psaki....

The United States is deeply concerned by reports that a vessel sailing under the name Morning Glory is loading a cargo of illicitly obtained oil at the Libyan port of As-Sidra. This action is counter to law and amounts to theft from the Libyan people. The oil belongs to the Libyan National Oil Company and its joint venture partners. These partners include U.S. companies in the Waha consortium. Any oil sales without authorization from these parties places purchasers at risk of exposure to civil liability, penalties and other possible sanctions in multiple jurisdictions.

  2. Libya orders military force to 'liberate' rebel-held ports...

(Reuters) - Libya's parliament has ordered a special force be sent within one week to "liberate" all rebel-held ports in the volatile east, officials said on Monday, raising the stakes over a blockage that has cut off vital oil revenues.

The rebels, which have seized three ports and partly control a fourth in the OPEC member country, said they had dispatched forces to deal with any government attack.

The two sides seemed to be heading for military confrontation after a North Korean-flagged tanker finished loading crude worth $30 million at rebel-held Es Sider port despite a government threat to bomb the ship.

Western powers worry the North African country will slide deeper into chaos or even break apart as the government struggles to control militias who helped oust Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 but now defy state authority.

Parliament ordered the formation of a military force made up of regular soldiers and allied militias from across Libya to free the ports, which previously handled a total of more than 700,000 barrels of oil per day.

The operation will start within one week, parliament head Nuri Ali Abu Sahmain said in a decree published by spokesman Omar Hmeidan. "The force will be set up to liberate the ports and end the blockage," Hmeidan told Reuters..............http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/03/10/us-libya-oil-idUSBREA2709K20140310?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  3. Libyan troops seize North-Korea-flagged oil tanker ...

Libyan government forces on Monday seized a North-Korean flagged tanker after it had loaded $30 million worth of crude oil at a rebel-held port, officials said.

  4. U.S. Navy SEALs board rogue Libyan oil ship....

U.S. Navy SEALs took control of a North Korea-flagged tanker that had loaded crude oil at a port held by rebels in eastern Libya, the Pentagon said in a statement on Monday.

According to the Pentagon, the move was made at “request of both the Libyan and Cypriot governments.”

No one was hurt "when U.S. forces, at the request of both the Libyan and Cypriot governments, boarded and took control of the commercial tanker Morning Glory, a stateless vessel seized earlier this month by three armed Libyans," Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said in a statement, reported by Agence France-Presse.

The ship was boarded by the SEALs just after 0200 GMT Monday “in international waters southeast of Cyprus” following President Barack Obama approval of the operation.

The statement said the ship “is carrying a cargo of oil owned by the Libyan government's National Oil Company. The ship and its cargo were illicitly obtained from the Libyan port of As-Sidra.”.....................http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2014/03/17/U-S-Seals-board-rogue-Libya-oil-ship.html
