Over 161,000 families or about 725,000 individuals were pre-emptively evacuated in three provinces in eastern and central parts of the Philippines due to typhoon Melor, locally named as Nona, the state disaster management agency said Monday.

Those who were evacuated came from the provinces of Albay and Sorsogon, and in Northern Samar, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

Classes were also suspended in eight provinces and at least 40 domestic flights were cancelled due to the weather disturbance.

Nearly 8,000 passengers, 62 vessels and 552 rolling cargoes were also stranded due to rough sea conditions.

  1. 20 Killed as Storm Lashes Philippines, Another Storm Approaches Philippines...

Typhoon Nona claimed at least 20 lives as it moved out the Philippines. However, a tropical depression, locally named "Onyok", was heading for the southern island of Mindanao. Although the typhoon left the Philippines on Wednesday, floodwaters about three feet deep still covered farming regions about an hour's drive north of Manila. Although Onyok is only a tropical depression, it is forecast to bring heavy rain to areas not used to fierce weather. Pre-emptive evacuation and forced evacuation done. Other preparations include identifying vulnerable areas, designating evacuation centers and pre-positioning heavy equipment and food supplies are done by the government.
