The US state of Alaska appears to be on the track to have one of its worst fire seasons on record due to hot and dry conditions, with more than 2.2 million acres (890,308 hectares) having been burned.

Alaska mine could be blocked to save salmon fisheries

WASHINGTON: US environmental authorities made a rare move on Friday to block a massive copper and gold mine in Alaska before it even gets under way, in a bid to protect wild salmon.
The Pebble Mine project has the potential to be one of the biggest open pit copper mines, but once built, it could threaten the exceptionally rich salmon fishery in the Bristol Bay area, the Environmental Protection Agency explained in a statement.
"Extensive scientific study has given us ample reason to believe that the Pebble Mine would likely have significant and irreversible negative impacts on the Bristol Bay watershed and its abundant salmon fisheries," said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy.

Rosneft gets access to $100bn gas and oil field in Alaska

Rosneft has reached an agreement with Exxon Mobil to acquiring a 25% stake in the Point Thompson Alaska oil and natural gas field. The deal is part of the larger cooperation on exploring the Russian Arctic shelf.
­The head of Rosneft Igor Sechin and the President of ExxonMobil Stephen Greenlee have signed an agreement on joint exploration of new sectors of the Russian Arctic shelf, expanding the 2011 strategic partnership agreement.
Under the deal Rosneft gets access to one of the largest fields in Alaska which is currently operated by ExxonMobil. Participation in the project will let Rosneft develop up to a quarter of the proved gas resources of the Alaska North Slope, as well as get the latest technology for exploiting liquid gas fields in bad weather conditions, according to Igor Sechin.

Am Freitagmorgen haben 25 Greenpeace-Aktivisten aus ganz Europa auf einer Shell-Tankstelle unweit des Weltwirtschaftsforums in Davos protestiert. Sie kritisieren die Pläne des Konzerns, in der Arktis nach Öl zu bohren.
Die Aktivisten und Aktivistinnen aus Deutschland, Schweiz, Italien und Frankreich haben drei Tonnen Eis auf dem Vorplatz der Tankstelle verteilt. Auf dem Eis saß ein täuschend echter Eisbär. Am Dach der Tankstelle hing ein Transparent mit der Aufschrift: "Arktisches Öl - zu riskant".
Auch Kumi Naidoo, Exekutivdirektor von Greenpeace International, befindet sich auf dem Weltwirtschaftsforum (WEF). Naidoo sagt: "Die gewaltigen Risiken, die Shell in der Arktis eingeht, sind für die Investoren, die unberührte Umwelt und das Klima gleichermaßen eine schlechte Nachricht. Nach einer Pannenserie in Alaska, bei der der Konzern von einem gefährlichen Zwischenfall zum nächsten strauchelte, ist klar: Shell ist nicht in der Lage, eine solch waghalsige Unternehmung auch nur annähernd sicher durchzuführen"..........

Σε ασφαλές λιμάνι οδηγήθηκε τη Δευτέρα μια πλατφόρμα εξόρυξης πετρελαίου της Shell η οποία είχε προσαράξει σε βραχώδη περιοχή κοντά στο νησί Κόντιακ στην Αλάσκα, μετέδωσε το διεθνές ειδησεογραφικό πρακτορείο Reuters.
Η εξέδρα «Kulluk» (μήκους σχεδόν 83 μέτρων) παρασύρθηκε από τα ορμητικά κύματα εν μέσω έντονης θαλασσοταραχής την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα, μεταφέροντας περισσότερα από 650.000 λίτρα καυσίμου και άλλων προϊόντων πετρελαίου. Τελικά, ύστερα από πολλές προσπάθειες και αφού χρειάστηκε να περάσουν τέσσερις ημέρες μέχρι τα πρώτα μέλη της πετρελαϊκής εταιρείας να προσεγγίσουν την πλωτή εγκατάσταση με τη βοήθεια ελικοπτέρου της αμερικανικής Ακτοφυλακής, το βράδυ της Κυριακής ξεκίνησε η διαδικασία ρυμούλκησης της σε ασφαλές σημείο.

Shell-Ölplattform schwimmt wieder

Die gestrandete Shell-Ölbohrinsel "Kulluk" ist wieder in Bewegung. Am Sonntag um 22.10 Uhr Ortszeit konnte die Plattform von der Stelle gezogen werden, an der sie am 31.12.2012 auf Grund gelaufen war. Inspekteure an Bord sollen den Zustand der Kulluk überprüfen. Die Plattform soll nun in die dreißig Meilen entfernte Kiliuda-Bucht gezogen werden.

Vor Ort in der Ocean-Bucht sind auch zwei Ölbekämpfungsschiffe, um auf einen möglichen Unfall reagieren zu können. Auf der "Kulluk" befinden sich eine halbe Million Liter Diesel und 45.000 Liter Schmieröl. Heikel: Die Kiliuda Bucht, in der die Plattform zunächst in Sicherheit gebracht werden soll, gehört teilweise zum Kodiak National-Naturschutzgebiet.

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake has struck the western coast of Alaska. A tsunami warning has been issued for Alaska and British Columbia.
Craig, Alaska, is the city nearest to the epicenter of the quake, the US Geological Survey reported.
The tremor occurred at a depth of 6 miles (9.6 kilometers) at 8:58am GMT.
Local residents wrote on Twitter that they have received alerts to evacuate the beaches.

Πλατφόρμα που μετέφερε τρυπάνι της πετρελαϊκής εταιρείας Shell προσάραξε την περασμένη Δευτέρα στις ακτές της Αλάσκας, λόγω κακοκαιρίας.
Σύμφωνα με ανακοίνωση αξιωματούχων της εταιρείας και της κυβέρνησης το πλοίο «Kulluk» ξέφυγε από την πορεία του και χτύπησε σε βράχια κοντά στο νησί Κόντιακ.

Attempts to save drilling device which has run aground postponed

The attempts to save a drilling device, which had run aground near Alaska’s shore, have been postponed because of strong wind.

The device, which belongs to the “Royal Dutch Shell” company, ran ashore near the island of Kodiak on Monday.

On December 30, the device began to drift because the engines of the towing vessel went out of order. The crew of the device was evacuated.

No oil spill seen at Shell drill ship in Alaska

An overnight Coast Guard flight over an Alaska drilling rig that ran aground in shallow water off a small island on New Year's Eve found no signs of a fuel spill.

But officials at a unified command center run by the Coast Guard, Royal Dutch Shell PLC, state responders and others said they'll have to wait until daylight to know for sure what environmental impact the grounding might have caused.

The Kulluk grounded Monday night on rocks off the southeast side of Sitkalidak Island, an uninhabited island in the Gulf of Alaska.

Alaska (AP) — Royal Dutch Shell PLC's foray into Arctic offshore drilling has suffered a serious setback after one of its two Alaska drilling rigs ran aground in shallow water off a small island.
Officials at a unified command center run by the Coast Guard, Shell, state responders and others said the Kulluk grounded Monday night on rocks off the southeast side of Sitkalidak Island, an uninhabited island in the Gulf of Alaska.
The Kulluk was being towed by a 360-foot anchor handler, the Aiviq, and a tugboat, the Alert. The vessels were moving north along Kodiak Island, trying to escape the worst of a North Pacific storm that included winds near 70 mph and swells to 35 feet. Sitkalidak is on the southeast side of Kodiak Island.
