During their visit to the CEZ in 2019, they collected samples of a nematode worm species called Oscheius tipulae.

"These worms live everywhere, and they live quickly, so they go through dozens of generations of evolution while a typical vertebrate is still putting on its shoes," Rockman stated in a press release announcing the study's findings.

Equipped with Geiger counters and protected by gear, they gathered samples of soil, decaying fruits, and other organic materials containing the worms from various radiation levels.

The researchers sequenced the genomes of 15 worms collected from Chernobyl and compared them to five nematode lineages from other locations. Although the worm lineages varied in their tolerance to DNA damage, these differences were not linked to the radiation levels at the collection sites.

The researchers stated that they "could not detect a signature of radiation damage" in the Chernobyl worms. While cautious about drawing conclusions, Tintori and Rockman expressed optimism that this research could have implications for cancer treatment. Their findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

A recent study from Princeton University also found that wolves living in the CEZ exhibit high resistance to cancer.
xronoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13107445158803745642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2877698188774561460.post-76466294451342252072024-02-29T07:26:00.002+02:002024-02-29T07:26:38.341+02:00Doomsday Glacier Began Melting Earlier Than Previously Thought

According to a new study, the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica has been losing ice at an accelerating rate since the 1940s. Previously, scientists thought the glacier only began losing its ice much in the 1970s.
This study’s findings are ominous; the glacier has been nicknamed the “Doomsday Glacier” because its collapse could result in disastrous sea level rising.

The study, published on Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, analyzed marine sediment cores taken from beneath the ocean floor to reconstruct the glacier’s history from its present to over 10,000 years ago. They found that the Thwaites Glacier, and its neighboring Pine island Glacier, both lost contact with the seafloor highs in the 1940s.

They believe that a massive El Niño took place at around the same time that these glaciers began to lose their mass.

“Thwaites Glacier plays a vital role in regulating West Antarctic Ice Sheet stability and, thus, global sea-level rise,” the study authors write.

If the Thwaites Glacier collapses on its own, it will cause sea levels to rise by roughly two feet (65 centimeters). And because it is responsible for holding back the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, its collapse could trigger further melting that may spiral into a sea level rise of 10 feet (3 meters) and cause catastrophic global flooding.

“The synchronous ice retreat of these two major ice streams suggests that, rather than being driven by internal dynamics unique to each glacier, retreat in the Amundsen Sea drainage sector results from external oceanographic and atmospheric drivers, which recent modeling studies show are modulated by climate variability," the study authors write.

xronoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13107445158803745642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2877698188774561460.post-38651203651500866502024-02-28T09:40:00.002+02:002024-02-28T09:40:22.009+02:00Texas wildfires out of control, disaster declaration issued, evacuation orders
--

A fast-moving wildfire fueled by dry and unseasonably warm conditions spread in the Texas Panhandle Tuesday afternoon, burning more than 250,000 acres, prompting evacuation orders, closing roads and enveloping much of the region in black smoke.

The US state of Texas issued a disaster declaration Tuesday as massive wildfires continued to burn out of control, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 60 counties in the panhandle.

"I issued a disaster declaration today to ensure critical fire response resources are swiftly deployed to areas in the Texas Panhandle being impacted by devastating wildfires," Abbott said in a statement.

antixronoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17321757470762094126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2877698188774561460.post-74626654639652969642024-02-20T17:52:00.004+02:002024-02-20T17:52:40.195+02:00European satellite could crash in a random place on Earth tomorrow, 21 Feb.

The European Union's uncontrolled ERS-2 satellite is expected to fall to the planet tomorrow (21 February), Sky News announced.

Launched in 1995 for scientific purposes, the satellite became inactive in 2011, and since then little by little it has been approaching the Earth's surface.

The five-ton device is expected to burn completely in the atmosphere, but there is a risk that part of the debris will reach the surface. Consequently, in such a storm they may be harmed, especially if they are not adult specimens, which is what happened to the farm, i.e. they lost the whole spat, these are young oyster specimens. If there is a spawning period in the near future, the ecosystem will go back to normal in 2-3 years, because mussels take years to become adults," said Lantushenko.

According to her, the disaster did not affect large species of fish, as they do not come close to the shore during the storm.

A powerful storm hit the Russian south on Sunday night. An experimental oyster spat, grown as part of research by the SPC MoreAgroBioTech company was wiped out.

Earlier, Governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhayev reported that the natural disaster damaged or destroyed equipment at the Sevastopol Marine Aquarium; over 500 marine animals died.

The cyclone that rocked Russia’s Black Sea coast at night and in the morning of November 27 was marked by hurricane winds and massive flooding. The affected regions include the republics of Crimea and Dagestan, the Krasnodar and Rostov regions, the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, and the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. At least four people were killed and several dozens injured. The weather event damaged homes, caused power outages and traffic problems. [TASS]

--
