Tropical Storm in Philippines Leaves Nearly 90 People Dead, Dozens Missing
A tropical storm in the south of Philippines, which triggered landslides and flooding, has killed nearly 90 people, while the search for dozens of others is still underway, police and disaster officials report on Saturday.

The disaster occurred on the main southern island of Mindanao late on Friday.

"We are still trying to confirm reports of a farming village buried by a mudslide," said Ryan Cabus, an official in Tubod town, as quoted by Reuters.

According to the official, rescue efforts are complicated due to power and communication lines having been cut.

  • More than 100 people are reported to have been killed as a tropical storm swept through the southern Philippines, with dozens more missing.

Storm Tembin brought flash flooding and mudslides to parts of Mindanao island.

Two towns badly hit were Tubod and Piagapo, where a number of homes were buried by boulders.

Tembin, with winds of up to 80km/h (50 mph), has now passed across Mindanao and is heading towards the southern tip of Palawan before moving further west.

The Philippines suffers regularly from deadly tropical storms, although Mindanao is not often hit.

Tembin, known as Vinta in the Philippines, started lashing Mindanao on Friday, with a state of emergency declared in some parts, including the Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur regions.

  1. Over 130 killed in Philippines storm floods...

The death toll from a tropical storm in the southern Philippines has risen to 133, as rescuers pulled dozens of bodies from a swollen river, police said.

Tropical Storm Tembin has lashed the nation's second largest island of Mindanao since yesterday, triggering flash floods and mudslides.

Rescuers retrieved 36 bodies from the Salog river in Mindanao today, as officials reported more fatalities in the impoverished Zamboanga peninsula.
