Smog to hit Beijing again after short break

Beijing is expected to be shrouded in smog after it experienced a long-awaited sunny day on Monday, according to the National Meteorological Center.

Air quality improved from Sunday evening thanks to the arrival of cold air, bringing the blue sky on Monday.

However, as the influence of cold air is limited, it is forecasted that mild to moderate smog would hit Beijing again from Tuesday to Wednesday.

Since Oct. 14, the city had been covered in heavy smog, causing low visibility and a yellow alert.

The intensity of PM 2.5, airborne particle matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter and a major indicator of air quality, reached nearly 380 micrograms per cubic meter of air, indicating a heavy air pollution.

Rao Xiaoqin, senior engineer at the National Meteorological Center, warned that the public should intensify prevention measures on smoggy days to ensure good health and traffic safety.
