2 killed, 23 injured in S. Africa bridge collapse

A temporary bridge collapsed on a main motorway in South Africa's Johannesburg on Wednesday, killing two people and injuring at least 23 others, according to rescue teams at the scene.

The death toll was expected to rise as rescue teams were trying to pull people out from the debris.

Several vehicles were buried in the debris, according to witnesses.

The scaffolding around the under-construction bridge caved in while cars were driving underneath it, paramedics said.

A helicopter was seen hovering overhead, rendering help to the rescue work.

The accident took place in Sandton, a financial hub in Johannesburg during the afternoon rush hour, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Police said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
