More than 3,000 people were taken to hospital across Japan due to lingering high temperatures in one week time from July 6 to 12, with four of them dead, government data showed Tuesday.

The figure was up 6.5 times from 471 people in the previous week, and nearly half of the total number were aged 65 or older, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

By prefecture, Saitama topped the list with 190, followed by Osaka with 185 and Kumamoto with 172.
